NYC School Fence Project

The School Fence Project is about using art as a tool to break down barriers surrounding school fences.  Often these fences are seen as a line where parents drop off kids or where residents in the community stroll by without a second look.

 

I wanted to get people to envision a space of conversation and collaboration. Together with the community, I created flowers made from wood and umbrellas made from aluminum; these colorful pieces enabled us to start a new kind of dialogue. Because of these projects, seniors are now volunteering in schools, schools are thinking of ways to collaborate with the community, and parents are seeing a place where the
